Before going into the conditions that need to be considered for building a plant, it is important to have a basic idea of the PVC extrusion and how it works.

How does plastic extrusion machine work?

PVC extrusion is a thermomechanical industrial process. It makes it possible to transform the raw material, such as plastic, with the help of an extruder, into a long profiled product such as plastic tubes or PVC tubes, plastic curtains, pipes, or flat to know the plastic bags, food film, etc. The transformation is done by the PVC extrusion machine. This machine subjects the plastic under pressure with a suitable temperature conditioning.

Raw Materials Needed For PVC Manufacturing

The next is to consider the raw materials that would be used in the manufacturing process. The major raw materials needed for the manufacturing of PVC include DOP, PVC resin, lubricants, processing acids, fillers, electricity, water, stabilizers. and colors.

PVC Extrusion Machine and other Equipment

Conditions required for building PVC extrusion plant include:

• Laboratory: A laboratory is needed for chemical testing equipment such as Oven, chemical balance, and equipment with testing equipment, specific gravity lead and tin estimation (in ppm), apparatus for testing bulk density, Lab. Equipment consisting of Impact tests, capacity testing apparatus, Hydraulic pressure compressive strength

• recycling Pump units and overhead water tank.

• Electric Motor fitted heavy duty, Scraper, grinder,

• Maintenance of small hand tools, PVC product storage etc.

• Nonshell type cap, high-speed Mixer filled with cooling and complete controls arrangements

  • Principle of extrusion

The plastic extrusion process consists in introducing into a cavity of the extruder the raw material which is the raw plastic, in the form of solid granules. The machine heats the aggregates to a temperature suitable for extrusion, in order to obtain a homogeneous and molten plastic paste.

An endless screw rotates and forces the molten plastic paste to press under pressure, through the extrusion head of the machine. The latter ensures the transfer of this paste to the die that will impose the final product shape and thickness.

  • Extrusion techniques

For the manufacture of objects of various shapes, the molten plastic paste, coming from the extruder, is directly injected under pressure through the walls of a mold. The extrusion process will then be completed by cooling the mold using a cooling circuit provided for this purpose. The hardening of the piece thus manufactured is then ensured.

A second process, called inflation extrusion, is used for the production of long products that will be cut later as needed. In this case, the die head of the extruder is set to obtain a thin tube of molten plastic.

By blowing compressed air, the tube is inflated like a balloon, its walls will refine. This tube is pinched between two large rolls, which allows to obtain a thin film with double thickness. The latter will be wound on a reel, so it is ready to be used to make plastic bags or food films for example.

The extrusion process also applies to various products such as metals, rubbers, in brick factories for the production of honeycomb clay bricks or, in the food industry for the production of pasta, for example.
